Great outdoor activity shoe

by Georgesbub — June 18, 2019 4:30:13 PM MDT
I bought these shoes to wear when wading or swimming in a gravel-bottom river. Previous water shoes I have tried were too flimsy, and caused pain from stepping on rocks, as well as difficulty with balance. The firmness of the sole in this shoe made all the difference in the world for me. That’s not my favorite feature, though. What I like most about this shoe is no gravel or sand getting into the shoe. Big plus! The fit is great for me. I ordered my usual size 7; the wider toe box was especially comfortable. I have rheumatoid arthritis, which causes a lot of pain in my feet and ankles. I have a hard time finding any kind of shoe that I can wear for several hours. These were comfortable all day. I am going to try them on a hiking trail to see if they are just as comfortable and supportive there.

Loving My Women’s Fin 3.0 and SoftScience Terrafin Wading Boots

by Lisa — January 28, 2019 8:58:14 AM MST
I spent last month in Patagonia – Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and Chile. It was an amazing trip with lots of hiking, fly fishing, camping, and exploring. I carried three pair of shoes with me – my SoftScience Fin 3.0, SoftScience Terrafin Wading Boots (men’s – the women’s were not yet available), and my Salomon hiking boots. Let me start by saying I love my hiking boots and on previous trips wore them constantly and certainly had planned to do the same this trip. I have found it difficult to find shoes that fit well especially shoes that do not compress my toes – and was initially drawn to SoftScience Shoes because of their wider toe box area. Due to the logistics of our trip, I decided to try bringing my Softscience shoes and wading boots to help keep the weight of our luggage down and to wear the very lightweight Fin 3.0 shoes on the long plane ride down (over 40 hours with layovers). I was amazed with the comfort level and didn’t once think about taking the shoes off during the flight. In fact, over the course of the month long trip, I was so happy with the fit and performance, that they never left my feet except when I put on my Soft Science Terrafin wading boots or when I was in my sleeping bag! What I didn’t expect was how happy I would be with the performance. Features I loved included the lightweight nature of the shoes and wading boots; wide toe box creating a very comfortable fit; quick drying after getting wet; how well they stood up to being muddy, dusty, and wet – they still look quite new, and both shoes were easy on and easy off. The wading boots were very lightweight, dried very quickly, had great grip on the rocks, and performed way beyond expectations. Great for travel and I didn’t feel I gave up much performance when compared to my usual wading boots with studs. Things that could be improved – I feel the wading boots are sized small. I wear a women’s US size 8 and ended up with a men’s 7 and fully expected to swim in them. In reality, they fit well, a tad small in fact. The wading boots do not provide a great deal of ankle support but were adequate for what we needed in and around the rivers. We did a number of river crossings and hiked for miles along and on the rivers. The Fin 3.0 shoes are not waterproof, so stepping in water resulted in wet socks quickly but the shoes dried very quickly and allowed good air circulation. Obviously, this was not a concern with the wading boots. I’ve read complaints about the look of the shoes – I thought they were cute in the country – not quite dressy enough for Santiago but I’m an outdoors girl and don’t care too much about fashion. The back of the shoes is very flexible – which encouraged me to step on the backs when walking around camp, which I have a habit of doing with all my shoes – I’m not sure this is great for the shoes but it didn’t seem to hurt them. So, after a month of constant wearing and use through Patagonia, I couldn’t have been happier with the performance and fit of both the Fin 3.0 and the Wading Boots. Note, we did not do much rugged climbing, but did climb several hills and over some canyon walls in the wading boots and they were more than adequate. In summary, I did not anticipate how comfortable I’d find these shoes. In the end, I only wore the hiking boots once and am contemplating not even packing them for next year’s return trip to Patagonia!
Full disclosure: I was provided a pair of Women’s Fin 3.0 and the Terrafin Wading boots to review. However, upon my return, my experience was so positive, my 96 year old mother purchased a pair of the Fin 3.0 shoes to wear on her daily 1-2 mile walks and she loves them too!
